This is Not a Game it’s a Way of Life

“Look how we take your children and sacrifice them and there’s nothing you can do. If you lift a finger, we will destroy every last one of you. Just as we did in District thirteen (Collins 19).” The motto of the capitol since the ending of the Dark days. The Dark Days was the uprising of the districts against the capitol. District thirteen suffered from a nuclear bombing by the capitol while the other twelve districts surrendered. Now The Hunger Games is a day to remind the remaining of the twelve districts that the capitol is the elite group, and that this was their form of peace. At the hunger games there are twenty-four tributes, two kids from each district (boy and girl) that range from the ages twelve to eighteen; they fight till the death in an arena and there can only be one winner.

Before the hunger games there is a draft called “the reaping,” during the day of The Reaping, Primrose Everdeen from District twelve gets selected as a tribute for the games, but her sister Katniss Everdeen loves Primrose too much to let her risk her life at The Games, so she volunteers as a tribute for Primrose. This is the first time in Hunger Game history that somebody volunteers as a tribute. The boy that randomly gets selected for District thirteen is a kind-hearted boy named Peeta. Although the Capitol created The Hunger Games as a new world order, the rebellious acts of Katniss and Peeta diminished the power of The Capitol and caused a minor revolution in The Games.

Katniss is a rebellious warrior to keep alive in the manipulative world of The Capitol outside and inside The Games. Katniss came from a repugnant background. “District twelve. Where you can starve to death in safety (6).” This District is known for coal mining, and also can be considered the low class which Katniss represents. She was less fortunate than others in the District and had no money to buy food for her family, so she has always been a poacher. Katniss would go hunting in the woods outside the grounds of District twelve with her best friend Gale who she unknowingly loved. She had performed the this rebellious act so much to provide for her family that the Peacekeepers turn a blind eye towards her, they understand how it feels to starve and “they’re as hungry for fresh meat as anybody is (5).” She would also sell items on the black market, which was illegal. Therefore when it came to The Hunger Games, she was driven to be victor because “The District that wins is showered with prizes and largely consisting food (19).” Katniss wouldn’t have to worry about starving for a year.

“To make it humiliating as well as torturous, the Capitol requires us to treat the Hunger Games as a festivity, a sporting event pitting every district against others (19).” This is one reason why citizens of Panem are scared to cause another rebellion against the capitol. This practice has caused them to have no faith in overthrowing the unjustly government. All twelve districts outnumber the capitol and have what it takes to rebel.

Its Hunger Game time and the rebellion begins to spark, and tributes have to train and get interviewed. When the tributes are riding the train to the Capitol where the games are being held, Peeta and Katniss start to form a bond but Katniss thinks he’s being sneaky. The people who initiated this rebellious bond are Cinna and Haymitch. Cinna is Katniss stylist and Haymitch is a victor of District twelve. “Just the perfect touch of rebellion (79).” Haymitch says this with pride because he is against the Capitol just like every other citizen. He says this because Cinna had the two tributes hold hands. This is a shocker to viewers of this televised event because no tribute has ever held hands. The Capitol strongly oppose of this because they want individuals to be against each other. “…I remember the other couples, standing stiffly apart, never touching or acknowledging each other, as if their fellow tribute did not exist (79)…” in short this is what Hunger Games is supposed to look like. When it came to training peeta and katniss trained together, this caused her to become more confused about the whole Hunger Games. “Without thinking, I pull an arrow from my quiver and send it straight to the Gamemakers table…Everyone stares at me in disbelief (102).” Katniss rebellious attitude caused her to shoot an around at the Gamemakers because she felt that with her life on the line they should at least pay attention to her skills from training. In the interview Peeta states “well, there is this one girl. I have had a crush on her ever since I can remember. But I’m pretty sure she didn’t know I was alive until the reaping (138).” This was mentioned at the interview; Peeta has confessed his love for Katniss. This example of rebellion was initiated by Haymitch because it would help them get sponsors, and sponsors provide you with necessities throughout the games.

Katniss is extremely confused, but now that she is in the arena she has to look out for herself still and continue to be a rebel, so that she can become victor. Since Peetas and Katniss alliance is broken at the beginning of the game. Katniss teams up with a little twelve year old named Rue. While Peeta joins the Careers the supposedly top dogs of the Games who are trained killers for the Games (Districts 1, 2, 3, and 4).

As a result Katniss set a god example of being a rebel for the citizens of Panem. Peeta also helped even when he knew he didn’t have the heart. Katniss is his motivation to stand up against the government. By Katniss and Peeta working together in the Games caused a happy ending for them because they got to stay alive, but the Capitol is certainly going to do something bad towards the tributes for beating them at their own game.

Rebellious Citizen

                                                               Rebellious Citizen!!

Not many people have the privilege of enjoying good food, nice cloths and a home in which they can live in. Such as what a young girl named Katniss Everdeen whom had to support her family by hunting in the woods after her father ides in a coal mining incident. She and her family live in District 12 which was also called “The Seam”. They were control in total control of the Capital who organized the Hunger Games which brought two teenagers from each district (One male and one female) to fight against each other to win food for their district. Due to the citizens rebelling to this in the Dark days, the 13 district that existed then went against the capital. They fail to win, therefore 12 remained and were punished to participate in this games that was televised for everyone to see. The thirteen district was destroyed to serve as a reminder to the rest of the district of what could happen when they rebel. Although rebellion is often seen as a threat to the citizens of Panem in the book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, to Katniss Everdeen rebelling was a way of survival, strategy to win the games and to catch people’s attention.

Katniss’ life had new obstacle that she had to overcome day by day to provide for her and her family food, clothes and a shelter where to live. Ever since her father died when she was 11, she had to go hunt to the woods. There she met her friend Gale who knew how to hunt as well. They would share technics, which helped them both provide for their families. “Even though trespassing in the woods is illegal and poaching carries the severest of the penalties, more people would risk it if they had weapons” (Collins 4). It being illegal to enter the woods shoes how rebels to follow the Capitals rules. Although she did that, it was not something that harmed her or anyone else. Her doing that was more like a good thing because her and her family survived from the food that Katniss would bring back home. Most of the time Katniss would hunt for rabbits, berries and squirrels which she would trade them a place called “The Hob” for different type of food.

Then the reaping for the 74th annual Hunger games came, her sister Primrose was chosen as a tribute to participate in the games. Katniss knew that Primrose did not have the experience or strength to go against other districts and that she would easily be killed. As a result of this Katniss decided to volunteer as a tribute to fight for her district. She and Peeta Melarck were sent to the district to be trained for the actual Hunger Games. That’s where she met Cinna her stylist. Who would try to encourage her to be unique, unlike other years that they were always boring with the same things. For the opening ceremony Cinna designed an outfit that then would give Katniss the name “The girl who was on fire” Because it had flames come out from the back (70). This brought more attention to the spectators, who were watching the games, and this will not only benefit her to gain more sponsors but it helped her district be recognized more. Then when they were presented to the people in the opening ceremony, Cinna came up with a strategy for them to win the games. “ I think he said to hold hands, says Peeta. He grabs my right hand in his left, we look to Cinna for confirmation. He nods and gives up a thumbs-up” (68). By doing this both Peeta and Katniss are rebelling because all the other districts go in on their own. The rules of the game is for only one person to stay alive and therefore no one in the Games should be friends because once the completion start they would have to kill each other. As surprising as it could be, Katniss and Peeta did it to follow Cinna’s orders. This strategy helped then gain more sponsors.

And finally Katniss goal in the Games is to win for her district and for her not to die. All she had to do was to get people’s attention for her district to be recognized more. One of her first way to catch people attention was when Katniss went to the training center and she shot an arrow the game maker so that she could catch the trainers and the spectator’s attention. Katniss was frightened of what they were going to do to her and her family for doing this, it even crossed her mind that she was going to get kicked out of the games. But when the reviewing of her scores came she was surprised because she receives an 11 for her actions during the training. Her rebelling and not being like the other tributes helped her have the confidence to win the games.

Katniss rebellions during the games benefit her in different ways to be more successful. In contrast rebellion can hurt people when they take the wrong actions. Such as what happened to a player who plays for Manchester City in England named Carlos Teves. He’s always been one of the top players from Argentinian’s National soccer team and for the club that he plays for. But in this occasions his coach decided to place him as a substations because he wanted to try how others players played in the field. Him not going in as a started made him think that he shouldn’t follow his coach’s rules. He ended not playing due to him not wanting to go in as a substitution for another player. As a punishment for him he was suspended for a few games and they even gave him a fine for disobeying the coach. It is not always good to be a rebel, you have to see when and where the right place to do it.

Throughout the book The Hunger Games, Katniss rebels to benefit herself and district. Her rebellion helped her survive by her hunting through the woods and proving food for her family to eat. Even though it was illegal for her and Gale to go in the woods, they did it for a necessity to help their families. Rebelling was also a way of strategy for her to win the games. Holding hands with Peeta made them more gain more sponsor for the Games. And finally she needed to catch their attention and them not wanting to listen to her during the training made her shoot and arrow through the game maker. Her rebellious action always seemed to help and benefit her, none like what happen to Carlos Teves when he refused to go in as a substation for another player. This not only made him look bad to his fans but it also gave him a suspension for several games and a fine. That’s why people should know where and where there is the right place to be a rebel. And like I always say, “We always learn from our mistakes”, or do we?

Uprising Citizens

Uprising Citizens

Governments can gain a lot of power over their citizens. They can use this power to control citizens and this has been the reality of many countries around the world. The citizens end up accepting the treatment because the control occurs at a slow enough pace that the citizens barely notice their rights are being taken away. Furthermore, even if they do notice it may be too risky for them to disobey because it can lead to punishment or death. However, eventually people can collectively get so worked up and frustrated that they reach a tipping point where they are willing to rebel against the government in order to make a point, even if there is a risk for danger. Although potentially dangerous, rebellion is a powerful weapon and it can work to neutralize the government’s power if used correctly. Panem is a nation run by a single-party dictatorship that serves as a great example of the government having too much control over its citizens. It can be shown that although citizens of Panem are under complete control of the Capitol, rebellion could work to the citizens advantage but sometimes it could ruin their own country.

Many countries have used rebellion as a powerful driving force to regain their rights and pressure their government to reform. History has proven rebellion to be method to cause government reform (Allen). Recently many organizations in the US rebelled against internet regulation acts SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act). Wikipedia blacked out their website for one-day, and many other organizations took similar extreme measures. In the end, these rebellious acts worked because the US government ended up delaying proceedings for these acts (Burns). This rebellion was relatively peaceful. However, rebellions can be more violent, such as recently in Egypt. Citizens became fed up with their living conditions, such as low wages, and began protesting against their leader Hosni Mubarak (ABC News). On January 25th 2012 demonstrators gathered in central Cairo peacefully but demanded an end to Mubarak’s power. Quickly, many Egyptians joined this rebellion. The rebellion became more violent and the pressure for Mubarak to step down increased. The rebellion worked because Mubarak quickly stepped down, but it came with a price. Roughly 300 people died and 2000 people were injured within 2 weeks (CBC News). These examples show that rebellion is a powerful tool but that it can also come with side effects, such as death and injury if it is not used wisely.

Through the book, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins demonstrates rebellion and its potential effects. Panem is the nation where the story takes place. It consists of thirteen districts that are oppressively ruled over by The Capitol. In other words, The Capitol is in effect the government. The capitol purposely keeps the districts separated in an effort so they cannot communicate and spread ideas, as that may lead to rebellion. Gale says “It’s to the capitol advantage to have us divided among ourselves” (collins14). He means that the capital uses division of the people as a tactic to keep themselves in power.

There are some moments in the book that shows a sign of rebel against The Capitol and one of them is the death moment of rue. Katniss says, “ I want to do something right here, right now, to shame them, to make them accountable, to show the capitol that whatever they do or force us to do there is a part of every tribute they cant own. That rue was more than a piece in their games. And so am I, (Collins 237)”. Katniss put some flowers at rue to make her more innocent and to make The Capitol know that she is human and should be killed and taken away as a garbage disposal. Peeta once said, “ I’d leave here”(83). He meant this if he had the chance to exit the capitol with no harm, that he would do it but if he couldn’t he would stand up in The Hunger Games and show them that he is the one in charge not anyone else. On the other hand, Katniss once thought that there was a sign of rebellion against Peeta because at the first moments they met in The Capitol. One of the moments is when they presented together as a couple. Peeta Says “Cinna says, “ I think he said for us to hold hands”. He grabs my right hand in his left, and we look to Cinna for confirmation. He nods and gives a thumbs-up, and that’s the last thing I see before we enter the city”(69). This was a sign of rebelling against Katniss and was confusing with the audience because in the end both of them will have to kill each other in the arena and holding hands will make it more complicated.

The districts became fed up with the oppressive reign of the Capitol and rebelled, but they were unsuccessful. The rebellion resulted in erasing of district 13. This served as an example to all the other districts to think twice before challenging The Capitol. To assert their dominance over the people even more, The Capitol created an oppressive event called The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is an event where one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen are chosen to participate in a battle royal to the death. The battle royal ends when one person is standing after everyone else kills themselves. Thus, the rebellion had negative effects as it made The Capitol angrier. The end result made quality of life worse for the citizens. The lesson here is that rebellion is a powerful force, but the results could be negative or positive. The government can become even more power, such as in this case, or the government could be overthrown such as in Egypt.

The Capitol manipulates the districts, people, players in any way they can to keep power and compliance. The hunger games continued for many years, but during the 74th hunger games event something happened. In the end of the 74th hunger gamewhen a few contestants were alive and the game makers knew that Katniss and Peeta where alive, a new rule was made. The game makers allowed a boy and a girl from the same district to win together. The Capitol used their authority to entertain. They liked the love story that was developing between the two. Again, this also helped reinforce to the people that the Capitol had complete authority over them. In a shocking turn of events, the game makers changed the rules again by overturning their previous rule that two people were allowed to win. This meant that Katniss and Peeta were required to fight to the death. The couple felt disappointed and betrayed. This sparked a rebellion: Katniss and Peeta decided they were going to sacrifice their life together. Katniss says, “I loosen the top of the pouch and pour a few spoonful’s of berries into his palm. Then I fill my own “On the Count of three”. (Collins 344)” They got out their poison berries were just about to eat them. Just before poisoning themselves, the game makers announced that they changed the rules yet again and allowed both of them to win. This suggests that the couple’s act of rebellion may have been the driving force to the Capitol’s reversal, which led to the couple’s survival. This rebellious act most likely served as a major influence to the citizens of Panem. After witnessing an act of rebellion being successful, they are now more likely to take another chance with rebellion in the future. These events show that rebellion needs to be carried out at the right time and at the right angle in order to bring the desired results. If not, rebellion can make matters worse, as we have seen.

Many humans want freedom of expression, including freedom of choice and speech. When this is restricted, tension may be created and eventually the people may rebel if too many rights are taken away. In Libya, citizens rebelled against the government. This led to massive violence and killing of government officials (NY Times). Many people died and the country became destroyed. The president was tortured without mercy and the rebels ended up controlling the country without a government. In this case, one might argue that there were no winners.

As we have explored, rebellion is a powerful weapon but people have to use it wisely because it can lead to both positive and negative outcomes. In the case of the rebellion against Internet regulation, there seemed to have been a positive outcome. However in the cases of Libya and Egypt the rebellions seemed to have destroyed the countries and so it could be thought that both parties lost. Panem’s first rebellion was unsuccessful and increased the oppression of the citizens by the creation of the hunger games. However when Katniss and Peeta rebelled by nearly committing a double suicide it was more powerful. The main point is that rebellion is powerful but it needs to be executed properly and at the right time.

Unforeseen Deviance -PJ

Unforeseen Deviance

Non-Conformity can be defined in many ways such as the disagreement of mainstream ideas to the resistance and refusal against higher authorities. Non-conformity has its up’s and down’s and depending on its reasoning, it can become quite beneficial. For some people, reasons can vary from wanting to be different, unique, desiring attention, to having a stand or objection in the ways of society- like how the Hippies did during the ‘60s. Whatever the reason may be, some consequences end up positive like as it does for Katniss, the main character from The Hunger Games. These consequences can possibly change the world or simply become beneficial to self-necessities. From this unforeseen expectation, non-conformity can be looked at encouragingly. It can also be perceived as a way to achieving a goal or making the impossible, possible. In The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, the citizens of Panem are submissively under the Capitol’s strict authority, yet, Katniss’ non-conformity and the determination of her actions prove to benefit her as she gains the sponsors and collective attention essential for her survival.

Katniss’ appearance at the Opening Ceremony and interview presents a form of differentially in order to catch the audience’s attention and favor. As Cinna prepares the costumes for District Twelve, he says to Katniss “I want the audience to recognize you when you’re in the arena. Katniss, the girl who was on fire” (The Hunger Games 67). Cinna tries to make Katniss and Peeta unforgettable with the fiery costumes since coal mining isn’t a popular idea for a creative costume. He also tries to make District Twelve distinct from the other Districts by making them hold hands during the ceremony. Katniss realizes that while all the other tributes present themselves separately, “Presenting ourselves not as adversaries but as friends had distinguished us as much as the fiery costumes”. It was “just the perfect touch of rebellion” that made them appear so different and unforgettable (79). After the Ceremony, everywhere Peeta and Katniss go, they remain together to keep up with their appearance as friends. Katniss, so far, is “shining like a star”. Along with having the top training score, she is, at this point, unforgettable by Cinna’s hard work and the fact that she volunteered to save her sister. The most important part though, is the impression the tributes make at the interview. That will decide exactly what they can get in terms of sponsors. Katniss refuses to lie during the interview and just appears to be humble and shows off her dress. Peeta, on the other hand, decides to confess his love for Katniss, which becomes more effective in gaining sponsors and attention. Haymitch explains to Katniss that Peeta “made you look desirable… You were about as romantic as dirt until he said he wanted you. Now they all do. You’re all they’re talking about. The star-crossed lovers from District Twelve” (135). Katniss’ refusal of lying in the interview is a perfect example of her desire to keep her individuality. Also, Peeta’s confession definitely makes Katniss and Peeta the most favorable tributes of The Hunger Games.

Non-conforming actions by Katniss are also driven by her determination of proving to the Capitol that she is not owned. This is not meant as direct offence towards the Capitol, rather just a way to not conform to all the rules of The Games. After a death in the Arena, tributes are to leave and move on. While Rue is dying, Katniss sings her a lullaby. After Rue’s death, Katniss decides to “decorate her body in the flowers. Covering the ugly wound. Wreathing her face. Weaving her hair with bright colors…[she] presses the three middle fingers of [her] left hand against [her] lips and holds them out in [Rue’s] direction” (237). This is a significant scene in the novel as it portrays a lot about Katniss’ characteristic. She makes Rue’s death a beautiful funeral and then makes the three finger gesture showing gratitude, love, and farewell. This action is to show the Capitol that Katniss can commemorate the one person she began to trust and respect. It is a symbol of humanity and free will. Because of her loving behavior to Rue, Katniss receives bread from District 11. Although her deviant actions go against the Game’s rules, she benefits by proving her point and receiving a loaf of bread.

In addition, Katniss uses every opportunity to survive even by manipulation and unintentionally rebelling against the Game’s Rules. For instance, Katniss rebels against Peeta’s wishes and gives him a sleeping medicine in order to go to Cornucopia to grab medicine for his leg. This sort of rebellion helps her and Peeta in a positive way. Another way rebellion is the strategy that “One kiss equals one pot of broth. …If I want to keep Peeta alive, I’ve got to give the audience something more to care about. Star-crossed lovers desperate to get home together. Two hearts beating as one. Romance” (261). Firstly, “Star-crossed love” itself is a rebellious love. This term basically means against the fates of the stars. Secondly, Katniss realizes that the more interesting she makes the Game, the more sponsors and gifts she’ll gain. She uses the love story to her advantage and to keep Peeta alive. Ultimately, Katniss admits that, “Our romance became a key strategy for our survival in the arena (Catching Fire 9). Everything from befriending Peeta to falling in love with him sparked an interest in the audience. Using this to their advantage is basically rebelling against the Game’s rules but really beneficial to their needs. Also, by gaining popularity and attention, Katniss receives numerous gifts to help feed and heal Rue, Peeta and herself. Above all, their final decision with the poisonous berries becomes a significant symbol of rebellion. After the rules changes to one winner, Katniss realizes that The Games must have a victor. Katniss and Peeta both take their lives in order for both of them to win. She explains: “All I was doing was trying to keep Peeta and myself alive. Any act of rebellion was purely coincidental. But when the Capitol decrees that only one tribute can live and you have the audacity to challenge it, I guess that’s a rebellion in itself” (18). Everything Katniss does is not intended as an uprising against the Capitol, rather just a determination to survive. When it comes down to it, Katniss’ deviance only makes her more admirable to the citizens of Panem ultimately benefiting her and Peeta in The Games.

On the contrary, any form of disobedience and rebellion is not tolerated in the city of Panem. During the Dark Ages, all Thirteen Districts went against the Capitol and were defeated; the Thirteenth District ended up obliterated. This is how The Hunger Games came about. “Taking the kids from our districts, forcing them to kill one another while we watch- this is the Capitol’s way of reminding us how totally we are at their mercy. How little chance we would stand of surviving another rebellion” (The Hunger Games 18). All the citizens of Panem are submissive towards the Capitol because they also depend on the Capitol for goods and necessities. Because of their dependency, the Capitol has full control and manipulation over the citizens. They have the ability to unrighteous and cruel punishments. For instance, people who are traitors or commit a crime are called Avoxs. As a punishment, the Capitol cuts out the Avox’s tongue so they cannot speak (77). In the Arena when Rue and Katniss become allies, Rue shares the stories of the unrighteousness of the Capitol. Rue admits, “We’re not allowed to eat the crops. …They whip you and make everyone else watch. The mayor’s very strict about it” and “Marin tried to keep his [night vision glasses]. …They killed him on the spot. And everyone knew he was no danger…he still acted like a three-year-old. He just wanted the glasses to play with” (202-204). These punishments are at extreme only to suppress all citizens. To create this fear of the Capitol, preventing any possibility of an over rule. In this case, a rebellion or any act of deviance would consequently follow by death.

As a result, little acts of rebellion prove to help Katniss in The Games to her survival rather than cause her execution. This is actualized by the influence on the suppressed citizens of Panem. The citizens are intrigued by the way Peeta and Katniss conduct themselves as friends. They are captivated by “The girl who was on fire”. They glorify the “star-crossed lovers” story, which essentially becomes the key strategy Katniss and Peeta use. Katniss takes every opportunity and resource to distinct herself among others, to outsmart the Gamemakers, and use her and Peeta’s rebellious love to gain sponsors. This sly rebellion and non-conformity makes her appear harmless to the Government and desirable to the citizens of Panem, greatly benefiting her throughout The Games.

The sheet music for Rue’s Lullaby. Music by Pateel Janetsian. Words by Suzanne Collins.

The sheet music for Rue’s Lullaby. Music by Pateel Janetsian. Words by Suzanne Collins.

This is my interpretation of Rue’s Lullaby. My friend and I kept making mistakes from laughing… so it’s not perfectly on pitch. I couldn’t get my piano to get any softer. :( Composed and played by Pateel Janetsian(me). Sung by me and Cecily Bell.

Deep in the meadow, under the willow
A bed of grass, a soft green pillow
Lay down your head, and close your eyes
And when they open, the sun will rise

Here it’s safe, and here it’s warm
Here the daisies guard you from every harm
Here your dreams are sweet—
—and tomorrow brings them true
Here is the place where I love you.

Deep in the meadow, hidden far away
A cloak of leaves, a moonbeam ray
Forget your woes and let your troubles lay
And when again it’s morning, they’ll wash away

Here Is the place where I love you

I don’t think living in the woods would be a good idea. Its already illegal to set foot in the woods. This is some rebellious thought by Gale. He really wanted to be with Katniss. Living in the woods would be like their little personal Hunger Games.
